Community Vision is launching the next era in inclusive housing in Oregon. Our Accessibility Roadmap shows what we must do to create more accessible housing and make sure those who need the accessible features get them.

The why is clear: There is a dire lack of accessible housing. We have directly observed the negative impact this has on people with disabilities and older adults.”

As we have been advocating for greater requirements, we discovered that the housing industry did not see the situation quite like we did. So, we set out on a journey to learn what they saw as the barriers to creating more accessible housing and how we can all move forward together.

Through in-depth conversations with housing providers, we learned that the marginal increase in cost, fear of running afoul of fair housing law, and perceptions of desirability of accessibility features are the main barriers to building more accessible housing. Thankfully, the interviewees also offered solutions. The solutions are organized into three roads: Education, Policy, and Matching.
