From our 2023 Impact Report:
Spencer worked with our Assistive Technology (AT) Lab to improve his computer skills. He wanted to start a career and move beyond the retail work he had been doing for many years. He knew that he needed new computer skills. He also needed a good computer set-up, since he is a one-handed typer.
We recommended that Spencer try a free online typing program, Typing Club, which has a one-handed typing tutorial. We also had Spencer try many accessibility settings on his computer such as Sticky Keys, Speak Selection, Dictation, and Dark Mode. Spencer learned more about Google Workspace and Microsoft Office through free classes. Through the AT Lab’s Loan Closet, Spencer tried out a high-low desk, laptop stand, and external keyboard and mouse, which created a more ergonomic setup for him.
“I am now a faster typer. I have a Gmail account, use Google Calendar, and I am updating my resume to include my new computer skills,” Spencer wrote us. “The AT Lab has given me strategies to advocate for myself at work. Thank you AT Lab!”
